Sumter has a rish colorful history. The first english speaking settlers arrived in the area in the mid 1700s and started setting up a colony on the banks of the Wateree River.

The “Sumter District” was established in 1800 and it was only 1 vote away from being elected the state Capital in 1786.
in 1912 Sumter became the first in the US to adobt the council manager form of government that is still in effect today.

Located right in the center of that state, the other manicipalities are Pinewood, Wedgefield, Rembert and Mayesville.
